USA Swimming #'s & Observed Meets
We've had a few questions about USA Swimming numbers and observed meets.
For high school-only swimmers, this is not a concern. Don't worry about it!!
For club swimmers, it could be important.
Club swimmers are registered (through the South Texas Swimming LSC) with USA Swimming.
Most club meets have time standards ("faster than", or "slower than") and official times swum in USA Swimming meets are used for entry to those meets. Those times can be found in the USA Swimming database commonly known as SWIMS.
While high school swim meets are not sanctioned by USA Swimming, some are classified as "observed" meets. This means that USA Swimming-certified officials will be on deck and times swum by club kids may be entered into SWIMS.
For example, some club swimmers will shave/taper for district, region, or state high school meets. Those meets will be observed. Times swum in those meets may be used to enter higher level club meets such as TAGS, Sectionals, Junior Nationals, etc.

Bowie HS Swimmers & Parents,
At our October 8 parent meeting, we discussed the challenge of competing in
the AISD Invite (Nov. 9) and Aggieland
Invite (Nov. 10) on consecutive days. We know it will be a tough
weekend, but the feedback I got from swimmers and parents was that we were going
to "go for it".
The AISD Invite was on the meet schedule our previous coach left me and is
obviously our priority meet of that weekend.
I added the A&M meet with the understanding that we would
first support the AISD meet and
then make the trip to College Station. My reasoning
for scheduling the A&M meet was twofold.
First and foremost, I feel it's important that we make every attempt to
compete in the facility that will be the site of our Region IV
championships.
Since our swimmers have competed in the A&M meet in the past, that
history also played a part in adding the meet to the existing schedule.
It has come to my attention that some may "decide" to "skip" the AISD
Invite, but expect to attend the A&M meet. This type of "decision" is not an
athlete's to make.
Each swimmer wishing to attend the A&M travel meet will email me their
preferences for events at both the AISD Invite and the
Aggieland Invite. Thanks to those of you who've already done this!
Only swimmers submitting that info will be
considered for travel to College Station.
If we exceed the entry limits for the AISD Invite, I will then have to pare
down our squad for that meet. Swimmers I pull
from the AISD meet will be allowed to attend the
A&M meet.
Thanks to a great fall fundraising effort, we can afford to make the trip
to A&M. That trip is still on, provided we support our AISD Invite as
well.
Thanks for your help and cooperation in getting emails to me early in the
week, as entries for both meets are due this Friday.
Sincerely,
Bob Button

Notes
We have upcoming meets that will be "observed". If you're registered with USA Swimming and would like times to go into the SWIMS database, please make sure I've got your number in the computer.
I let y'all know I was unhappy with the start of our warm-up and everyone responded well. Thank you! It was a safety issue and I appreciate your cooperation there.
We swam well but fell short in team scoring to Anderson HS. We'll email link to results soon. Captains will let us know who our swimmers of the meet were.
The next couple of mornings will be a bit chilly, so dress warmly.
Let's clean up our entries on our starts. While this video focuses mainly on the legs, pay close attention to how cleanly this young lady enters the water with locked out arms and a very tight steamlined position:
A few of you still owe our trainer paperwork. This should have been taken care of weeks (months?) ago, so let's get that wrapped up!
The Austin ISD Invite is our next meet. This will be an observed meet. Entries are due no later than Friday, Nov. 2. Entries are limited to four (4) individuals* and one (1) relay per team. This means we will not be able to take our entire squad. If you're hoping to attend, please drop me an email with three (3) individual events (in order of preference) you'd like to swim. I hope we can get you into one or two of those (no guarantees). Wouldn't hurt to include your USA Swimming number just in case I don't have it.
The Bob Stallings Aggieland Invite entries are also due on Nov. 2. This will also be an observed meet. We will be able to take our entire squad, as there are no limits on entries. As with the AISD invite, please email me three (3) individual events (in order of preference) you'd like to swim. Again, no guarantees. USA Swimming number required if you want your times to go into SWIMS.
Finally, this reminder from decathlon great Bill Toomey:

AISD Invite Volunteers
Coach Perez is asking for our list of volunteers for the Austin ISD Invite.
I'm being told that, as of right now, Bowie HS doesn't have anyone signed up!!
This is a very important meet for AISD and we need to support it. Please contact Amy Oldham ASAP to get signed up to help out.
Thanks!

Tri-Meet Update/Reminders
By now, I'm hoping y'all have lined up your carpools for Saturday's meet.
If you'd like to set up the team tents, please make arrangements with the Jordan's to pick those up.
Swimmers should arrive at the Anderson Mill pool by 7:15 a.m. Please be suited up, stretched out, and ready to splash by 7:30 a.m. We will warm up from 7:35 to 8:00 a.m. The meet will start at 8:30 a.m. The host expects the meet to be finished by noon. We'll swim a short group warm-down and have a brief team meeting after the boys' 400 free relay concludes.
Captains may decide if/where we can meet for lunch afterward.
If you didn't get an email to me with your individual event preference, you were not entered into any individual events. You may, however, attend the meet and swim on a relay (or two, or three). Please send me an email so I can plan for your swim(s).

Fly & Breast Turns
Watch how little time these guys spend on the walls. Also, note that the best "turners" throw their heads back, rather than sideways while on the wall. This helps them bring their legs through to the wall quicker.
p.s. Georgia's Neil Versfeld didn't jam any walls en route to the win.
Let's work on our summative judgement and avoid jamming walls on fly and breast.

Textbook 100 m Back
Most of these gals looked good underwater at the start. There was quite a difference on how they looked off the turn, though.
Since we get three (3) turns in the short course 100 back, think of the advantage you can get on your opponents with better underwaters.
Round Rock Invite
Results will be emailed. Host team will let me know when awards are ready.
Girls finished 5th in team scoring and boys were 4th.

Academic All-America and All-State
Our high school coaches' associations recognize our sport's outstanding student/athletes each year. We will submit applications in the spring for these awards programs:
Academic All-America lists are compiled by NISCA. This program is for seniors only and paperwork will be submitted in early 2013.
To qualify, swimmers must have maintained a very high GPA through their first seven (7) semesters of high school.
2012 list, form, and more info here.
Academic All-State is a TISCA program. It's for both juniors and seniors. Program is very similar to NISCA's.
2012 list is here.
